“Energy efficiency is the cheapest, quickest way to meet our energy needs, cut consumer bills, and reduce pollution.”
The energy crisis is impacting us all. Businesses and households all over the UK have had to deal with the increasing prices. Energy Efficiency Day (EED) is the perfect time to look at your costs, work out if you’re using your energy in the smartest way possible, and think about how you could reduce your energy consumption.
What is Energy Efficiency Day?
Energy Efficiency Day takes place on the first Wednesday in October. Dozens of energy efficiency advocacy groups come together to raise awareness about reducing energy consumption. It’s a day to share tips and tools to promote the benefits of energy efficiency and encourage people to think about how they are using their energy.
Why is energy efficiency important?
The most obvious reason is, of course, reduced costs. The less energy you use and waste, the more money you save. Spending the extra money on energy-efficient solutions will save you more money in the long run.
Another reason energy efficiency is so important is to reduce carbon emissions. Burning fossil fuels is our biggest source of energy. On average, around 50% of our electricity in the UK is generated using fossil fuels, creating carbon emissions and damaging our planet.
The more energy that’s wasted, the more that has to be produced. If you use your energy efficiently, you will produce less waste and, therefore, be helping the planet and improve your carbon footprint.
Lowering carbon emissions now puts businesses in a good place for the government’s net-zero plan. There’s no harm in getting started early and reducing carbon emissions where you can.
How Can You Save Energy?
There are small changes you can make that should help lower your energy usage. Although some of these things might seem obvious, they can make a difference:
Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs.
Switch off lights in areas that aren’t occupied or invest in sensors.
Use power-saving mode on computers
Make sure all computers are turned off when not in use or at the end of the day.
Avoid using the printer; only use it when it’s essential.
These are only a handful of changes you can make. Sometimes keeping up with where your energy is going and understanding why your energy prices are so high can be time-consuming and difficult.
