Fusion energy is a near-limitless low carbon energy source. In the long-term, fusion has the capability of meeting global surges in electricity demand expected in the coming decades.

How does fusion energy work?

Nuclear fusion is based on the reactions that occur in the sun. Fusion reactors smash together two light-weight atoms, deuterium and tritium, under immense heat and pressure. This fusion creates a heavier atom, helium, and releases a huge amount of energy.

Nuclear energy has been helping to power our homes and businesses for over 65 years. But it is still in the process of being developed to understand its full potential. While fusion may not be a complete certainty at the moment, many scientists believe it is worthy of investment. Recently more and more private businesses and investors have been turning their attention to fusion. The potential returns for the first firm to achieve viable fusion power generation are huge.

How could fusion accelerate a sustainable future?

Today, more than 80% of the developed world’s energy comes from fossil fuels. Carbon emissions must be significantly reduced and fast, if we are to have any hope of preventing further environmental harm.

Last year the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) awarded innovation contracts worth £2.3 million to speed up the development of fusion energy. This was funded with the intention of pushing the UK towards a more sustainable future following talks at COP26. UKAEA is providing 15 organisations with contracts worth between £50,000 and £250,000. This is to develop commercial fusion energy using digital engineering and hydrogen technology.

Fusion could be an effective and efficient alternative energy source. And it could generate electricity without the need for greenhouse gases. Sourcing fusion energy releases far fewer emissions meaning it could have the potential to be in abundant supplies around the world.

Fusion energy is global priority, and has been explicitly identified in Prime Minister’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. It was also highlighted in the December 2020 Energy White Paper.
